MSA Sports Uses AWS to Broadcast High School Sports

Pittsburgh, PA – July 26, 2016 – Anytime, Anywhere, Always There! Over the past 15 years, MSA Sports® (www.msasports.net), a division of Management Science Associates, Inc. (MSA), has worked with a team of broadcasters to deliver the full breadth of Western Pennsylvania high school sports live to students, families and friends all over the world. Working with Amazon Web Services® (AWS®), MSA developed an innovative new broadcasting streaming solution to improve its ability to meet the demands of sports fans. MSA Sports broadcast its first high school baseball game using this new solution on April 29, 2016.

“As our listeners’ technology preferences transitioned from personal computers to mobile devices, we needed to update our technological infrastructure,” says Jodi Zangrilli-Cook, MSA Sports Manager. “We broadcast up to 40 simultaneous games, relying on a small group of technical professionals to make it happen. This required us to develop a scalable solution, flexible enough to handle the inevitable challenges we face on game nights. After considering different technologies, we determined that AWS was the best fit for our needs.”

MSA worked with AWS to design a proof-of-concept solution and then constructed the production version. Steve Gold, Manager of the MSA Sports technology team, said, “Our AWS-based solution provides a great deal of flexibility, enabling us to adapt to evolving technologies and meet peak usage demands while also reducing costs. Integration of third-party technical components, such as Twilio®, Flashphoner and Wowza Media Systems™, combined with AWS Lambda and Amazon DynamoDB solutions allowed us to move from proof of concept to a fully operational system in short order. We look forward to building upon our success of working with AWS.”

“We’re pleased to see MSA Sports adapting their broadcast streaming offerings using the AWS Cloud to enhance the user experience for sports fans who want to watch games on their own terms – at any time, from any location, using any device,” says Tim Wagner, General Manager of AWS Lambda and Amazon API Gateway. “Through integration with AWS Lambda and Amazon DynamoDB, MSA Sports is now able to stream broadcasts with consistency and efficiently scale its operations.”
